From Numero Group

the Numero Group, Founded by Tom Lunt, Rob Sevier, and Ken Shipley in 2003, decided to approach the record business backwards. No corporate hierarchy; no company stationary. Just a big pile of music that no one had ever heard of. Their mission was simple: to dig deep into the recesses of their record collections with the goal of finding the dustiest gems begging to be released from their exile on geek street.

A shelf of Numero discs feels less like a "record collection" and more like a library. The library to date is a mix of thrift shop soul, skinny tie pop, Belizean funk, and hillbilly gospel. Numero makes records for people who may have everything from indigenous Central American drumming to Canadian chanteuses stacked next to their CD players. Check out their f-ing delicious catalog.

Pew Research Center offered its annual special trends report regarding America's most popular cities and once again, Detroit gets the shaft. However, Detroiters are very cognizant of scathing media bias. For decades, we have bore the unfortunate title of being deemed the country's bastard child, as proliferated by national news media, and this recent report is just another one for the trash. I mean c'mon! You have Tampa, Orlando, and Phoenix as more popular than New York, Chicago, and Minneapolis? Pew should have more accurately referred to their findings as "Researchers Hate Winter". Yeah, this is as fluffy as it gets.

Thomas Sugrue

Thomas Sugrue, author of the critically acclaimed "Origins of the Urban Crisis", is making an appearence at Wayne State Universty this month to promote his new book, "Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North". He will deliver the keynote presentation at the Richard C. Van Dusen Forum on Urban Issues at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be in the WSU Law School's Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium, 471 West Palmer. A book sale and signing will follow. An ex-Detroiter, Sugrue is now a professor of History and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. Read one of his in-depth interviews.

Getting Ghost

A new book has been published detailing the lives of a group of adolescents in Detroit caught in the drug game. It's called Getting Ghost and is available courtesy of The New Press. Phillipe Bourgois says, "This sensitive and brave book takes readers into the tragedy of deindustrialization and ethnic discrimination in America to reveal the lives of those trapped in the illegal drug economy. Bergmann forces us to face the contradictions of drugs, discrimination, and poverty in our heartland.".

One of our favorite Local dj's, Craig Gonzalez, offers up a set of classic house gems in the latest mix from his ongoing Impromptu Series. For Impromptu, Craig sets out to establish a theme that is raw and unedited (perhaps in homage to the mixtape era), but what supersedes the nature of this mix is the ability for it to re-introduce an original blueprint to a new generation of electronic music enthusiasts. Ashley Lieber

Ashley Lieber's creative work balances between the urban and the academic. She is a traditionally trained sculptor and has been an active artist since 2000. In 2005 she earned her BFA from Grand Valley State University, and is an MFA candidate at the University of Michigan, where she currently works and student teaches. She has been member to several artist collectives, including 280 Studios and The Free Radical Gallery. She is currently looking to her ecological concerns to inform her creative practice, and has entered study at U of M in The School of Natural Resource and Environment, focusing on water remediation and ecological restoration.
